Backup and restore

Your logbook lives on your devices and nowhere else. That’s the point of the app, and it’s also the reason this area exists: nobody else is holding a copy for you, so the copies are yours to make.

Start with H1. Everything else assumes you know what a bundle and a destination are. If the day has already gone wrong and you’re here to put a logbook back, go to H6 — and read its Before you start before you press anything.

GuideWhat it gets you
H1How backups work hereThe model, and a status card that’s telling you something true
H2Add a backup destinationSomewhere for a backup to land. Nothing else in this area works until you’ve got one
H3Encryption and passphrasesA deliberate answer to “can anyone who finds this file read my logbook?”
H4Back up nowOne backup, taken on purpose, right now
H5Automatic backupsA schedule, and an honest account of when it will actually run
H6Restore from a backupA logbook put back, by whichever of two very different operations you meant
H7Import a profile from a backupYour logbook onto a device that hasn’t got it — the same logbook, not a copy

One thing worth knowing first

There’s no Backup screen. Backup is the third segment of the Import / Export / Backup panel, and only one route lands on it directly:

FromControlOpens on
Dashboard profile card → Profile Settings → ACCOUNT & DATABackups — Destinations, schedule, restoreBackup
Dashboardthe Import / Export / Backup cardImport — tap Backup
Logbook⋮ (More Actions) → Import Data or Export DataImport or Export — tap Backup
Profile selector, with no profile open+ → Restore backupthe restore wizard on its own (→ H7)

Every guide here uses the first route. The Backups tile is the row directly above Delete Profile, at the bottom of that section (→ A10).

None of this is Pro. Backups, encryption, every kind of destination and both restore modes are free at every tier.

Two messages in the app tell you to go to a screen called Backup & Export. There’s no such screen. They mean this panel.

Words this area introduces

Bundle — one backup file. .aviarc when it isn’t encrypted, .aviarc.enc when it is. It holds one profile’s logbook database, plus every photo, scan and document that profile refers to.

Destination — a saved place bundles get written to: a folder, your Files app, Google Drive, or a WebDAV server. It’s stored inside the profile, not on the device.

Offsite — a destination you’ve ticked as being somewhere this device can’t reach. It’s a claim you make with a checkbox, not something the app detects. Google Drive is the exception: the app counts a Drive destination as offsite on its own, whatever the box says.

Passphrase — the words that encrypt a bundle. Not the profile PIN (→ A7). Nothing anywhere can reset it.

3-2-1 — three copies of your logbook, on two kinds of storage, one of them somewhere this device can’t reach. The app scores you against it.

Merge and Replace — the two ways to restore. Merge adds a bundle to the logbook you have; Replace throws your logbook away and puts the bundle’s in its place. Choosing between them is H6’s whole job.

Scope — whether a bundle holds the one profile you had open or every profile on the device. The restore preview shows it as This profile only or All profiles.
